Hot Day at Hideaway

Well, things around the pond have been, in a word, hot!. Two words, VERY hot. Even the heron spent much of its time hunkered down in cool belly deep water. One of its pals just flew in, a smoking contrail in its wake, no doubt looking for cool belly deep water itself. Even old Smokey jumped into the pond for a cooling dip. He swam from the back of the pond behind the island and made landfall near the ledge. From there he strolled through the yard, across the road and into the woods beyond. An even bigger guy walked down the driveway and on toward the creek behind the house. Finally, to round out the day, a small deer has dropped by for happy hour and Mom Deer showed up with her fawn. Hard to tell if these are new visitors or an earlier issue. Guess we should start requiring them to wear name tags. The heron seems to have taken squatters rights on the island. He flew in again this morning as usual and lurked in the high brush there most of the day. I suppose he thinks that he can carry out his dastardly assault on our fish in secret.
